In the spirit of Halloween, Bishop Kenny’s Anchor club hosted Trunk-or-Treating on Saturday, October 25, in partnership with the organization Dreams Come True. This organization aims to help kids with terminal illnesses fulfill their dreams.

The Anchor Club girls decorated the trunks of their cars and parked them around the Miller Electric parking lot. As the event went on, cars lined the lot filled with trunk-or-treaters holding out butterfly nets to catch their candy and treats.

“They usually have anywhere from one to three kids in each car, and then probably another, like an extra 50,” faculty sponsor Stephanie Merrill said.

For the kids who are unable to have candy, the Anchors prepare goody bags filled with little Halloween trinkets and toys. Every kid is given a designated butterfly net for the volunteers to place the candy in so that the kids aren’t at risk of exposure to contact.

“If they can’t have candy, they tie a little ribbon to it, just so that we know not to give them candy,” Anchor Club president Mia Hutto said. “That’s how we know whether or not they get toys.”

The goal of the event was to bring the joys of trick-or-treating to kids who haven’t been able to go out on Halloween due to being stuck in the hospital and their illnesses.

“It’s really just a great opportunity to give kids who didn’t get that childhood experience that we all got with trick or treating, to still enjoy Halloween,” Hutto said.
