Not all heroes wear capes. The heroes that keep the school running are the front office ladies, and the face of the front office, Julie Anna Milton.
Six years before she came to work at BK, Milton was the Testing Accommodations Coordinator for students between 3 and 8 grade at Assumption Catholic School. The students would take the test in the room with Milton. There would be anywhere between one and 18 students, depending on how many teachers and subjects were testing on that specific day.
“Each student would be in my room for 30, 45, 67 or 75 minutes,” Milton said.
Milton also worked at Assumption as a crossing guard. She would help direct traffic before school, from 7:20-7:50. She says she always knew when it was 7:50 because she would hear Bishop Kenny’s second bell.
“We could hear the National Anthem playing over the loudspeakers if the carline was running late,” Milton said.
What inspired her to work at Bishop Kenny was seeing the high school students walk over and pick up their younger siblings from Assumption. When she saw that there was a position open in the front office at BK, she knew it was meant to be, and a sign from God.
A typical day for Milton is greeting parents, visitors taking tours, answering the phone or calling students over the intercom.
“A lot of parents come to drop off iPads and lunches,” Milton said.
Her favorite part of the job is being able to see all of the kids walk past the front office talking, and smiling with her friends, instead of sitting inside of a classroom for hours. Milton says she absolutely loves when students smile, wave and say hi to her.
In her three years of working here, she says she has found her place.
“I do not have to start and end my day in the heat or cold, wind or rain, waving my arms and telling parents to keep rolling forward all the way to the end of the gym,” Milton said. “I am very grateful and feel blessed.”
