Junior Caleb Mattison breaks school record
Beyond the Field

Every time junior Caleb Mattison steps on the field for Friday night football, he shows off his Supreme socks and his attitude for winning.

Mattison has been playing football since the age of six, and this skill runs in his family. His dad played for The University of Arkansas, and Mattison views him as his biggest role model, along with his brothers, who currently play in college. Caleb Mattison is a junior running back and wide receiver for the Bishop Kenny varsity football team.

Mattison has played on varsity football since freshman year and has created a strong bond with his team and love for the program. He serves as a mentor for younger players on the team who are looking for advice about recruiting and player development.

“Bishop Kenny football has built my character, helping me follow Christ in my athletic journey and pushing others to better themselves and become a better leader,” Mattison said. “I love the competitive atmosphere and working with my teammates.”

Mattison’s favorite part of practice is spending time and learning from Coach Hudson.

“He’s my running back coach, and always brings the energy to practice,” Mattison said.

Mattison scored 28 touchdowns, beating his personal goal of 25 for the season. In the game against Godby on November 21, Mattison broke the Bishop Kenny “single game rushing record with 369 yards and 5 touchdowns,” according to @bkhs_athletics.

Mattison is pursuing to be a captain next year for his senior season where he can lead the team and serve as a role model.

“My teammates ask me questions about the recruiting process and how to better themselves on the field,” Mattison said.

Before every game, the football team has a tradition of going to mass in the school chapel. After this, they have a team meal and prepare for the game by stretching on the field. Mattison goes to the trainer to ensure he is safe to play. Then the team warms up together, gears up and listens to music.

In the BK off-season, Mattison is a sprinter and long jumper for the BK track team, where he focuses on conditioning and preparation for football so he can stay in shape. This includes sprint exercises the track coaches give him.

Mattison says he currently has 46 D1 offers and he hopes to continue his football career at the University of Tennessee where he will study forensic science.
