Senior Nyankir Deng always knew she wanted to do something in the medical field. To her, it is a way that she can help people and save lives, which goes hand in hand with what God always does: heal.

At first glance, Deng looks like a normal high school student balancing school work, college applications and the excitement for what’s ahead, but behind it all, her faith has guided her in all aspects of life.

Firm Foundation

Throughout high school, Deng has built a foundation that goes beyond academics. Her relationship with God, Deng says, has slowly become a source of peace and structure when enduring hardships.

“I look back at the Bible, because there is so much truth in it,” Deng said. “I think about all the great figures who went through really hard challenges, and reflect on what they went through.”

When faced with troubles or doubts, Deng says praying is one of the best ways to hold on to the hope that God is always with her.

Models of Faith

She also finds that going to someone who is more advanced and wise in their faith helps her figure out how to face any challenge.

“I started going to mass every day during school, being in the community of God not only just on Sunday, but every day,” Deng said.

This way of thinking has helped shape how Deng interacts with those around her. Her faith has changed her mindset for the better, she says, giving her the ability to show her faith in small, but meaningful ways, such as simply not hesitating to help those who need help.

Several people in Bishop Kenny’s faith community have inspired Deng, she says, like Father Peter, Father Ben and Mrs. Cabrey. Deng says each has played a part in teaching her practical ways to build a strong faith. Being involved in youth ministry, on campus and in her own parish, has shown her the importance of surrounding herself with people who will strengthen her faith.

Ministry Matters

Deng serves as an Extraordinary Minister and is a member of St. Vincent de Paul, and says that attending retreats has been important in her personal growth as a Catholic.

“I’d probably say [I’m proudest of] the Quest retreat, because it was the first time I was a leader,” Deng said. “I think I got a different perspective…by helping people.”

Going to retreats has helped Deng develop qualities that she thinks will be useful for her, as well as the people she will be able to share them with.

“We go to a Catholic school, so we are dealing with the faith every day,” Deng said. “But when I eventually go to college and in my future, I’m obviously going to meet people who aren’t Catholic, and I think I will be able to interact with them in a way that’s not pushing them to be a Christian, but expressing God‘s love only through my character.”

Looking Ahead

Many habits that Deng has developed, such as attending mass, receiving the sacraments, and even the friendships that spiritually guide her; these will support her in the goal of continuing her service to God.

Deng says she hopes to be remembered as someone who always implemented Christ in everything that they do, even in college and her career, as helping others will continue to be a key factor in her life beyond high school.
