Tucked away in a windowless office, Director of Technology Larry Rodriguez checks his email, waiting for a notification that tests if the internet is working.

From connecting to the internet, to using classroom Promethean boards, Rodriguez helps with it all.

A typical day starts off by checking his phone to make sure the internet is up and running in every building throughout campus.

“Every time [the power] goes down, hopefully I can see it going down, and going up as well,” Rodriguez said.

When the power and internet go down at school, there is a complicated task.

“We have to fix it without disrupting the rest of the network,” Rodrizuez said.

Rodriguez has a lot on his plate in these situations, because five or more buildings’ internet could be down at once.

“We like to attack the problems as fast as possible,” Rodriguez said, to get Kenny back to its normal pace.

Technology coordinator Jim Baas works with Rodriguez to manage school technological systems.

Connecting to the internet is crucial for the function of a normal school day, given that Bishop Kenny’s learning management system is online.

As an Apple Distinguished School since 2024, Bishop Kenny is a center of technological excellence, with a 1-to-1 ratio of students to iPads. Students use iPads daily, but are relying on Rodriguez behind the scenes to help them each day whether they realize it or not.

“When you tap on an app. The app connects to the internet and goes somewhere,” Rodriguez said. “We are taking care of everything from there.”

Rodriguez also helps teachers by installing new printers in the classrooms as necessary, and replacing or fixing them when needed.

Rodriguez leads technology initiatives and is a member of the school Technology Committee, which is behind all new updates, such as the Promethean boards in every classroom, the new PA system and the remote system that schedules the door locks to open in between classes.

“Whatever it is that the future is giving us, or it will challenge us to do,” Rodriguez said, “I think we can still say that BK is going to be ahead of technology in education for the future to come.”
