It’s hard to forget one’s first day of high school. Emotions of anxiety, boredom, and even excitement can pass through a student’s mind.
While that may only apply to freshmen, the rest of the grades still make lots of memories in their high school years in their classes and with the people they surround themselves with.
Being back on campus comes with different feelings and reactions of how the beginning of the school year starts. Each grade seems to feel differently, especially with their added experience.
Sophomore: Will Strickland
The second year of high school can feel like a relief, since sophomores are coming back to a familiar campus.
Sophomore Will Strickland seems to have adjusted nicely.
“I didn’t want to go back to school,” Strickland said. “But this year is probably more fun than last year.”
Strickland also believes this year has been harder, as he says that the staff tends to give more grace to the freshmen since they are new to this.
He takes all honors courses, AP Seminar, which is his favorite class, and also AP World History.
Strickland is also tackling school activities, from History Club to baseball.
“I try to get most of my school work done throughout the day,” Strickland said. “So most days I don’t have homework.”
Junior: Christopher Sutton
Junior year is a lot but according to Chris Sutton, the start of this school year is easier for him than the start of sophomore year.
“I already had bad grades at the beginning of sophomore year,” Sutton said
Although this year has already been easier for him, he knows it will get harder. Due to the fact that junior year is when the ACTs and SATs are primarily taken, Sutton says he is nervous about that. Junior year is also the year where you start preparing for college.
“We have to take things 10 times more seriously than last year,” Sutton said.
Sutton’s been at Bishop Kenny for all of his years of high school so far, so he primarily knows what to expect from Bishop Kenny and the curriculum it offers.
He takes all standard courses and is involved in History and Spanish clubs, along with the Track and Field Team. Sutton experienced a lot during his time at Bishop Kenny.
“Do not slack off,” Sutton said. “Stay organized and be on top of everything.”
Senior: Sophia Diaz
Students can finally have a break since it’s their senior year, but senior Sophia Diaz hasn’t stopped working.
Diaz is taking almost all AP classes, involved in many clubs like Spanish and History, and she is a part of several Honor Societies, which is also a contributing factor to why she thinks this school year is somewhat difficult.
Sophia’s schedule is packed, and she says she is constantly working.
“I either go to mass when I don’t have a lab, or I go to Calc. BC lab in the morning,” Diaz said.
Nevertheless, she’s happy to be back at school even though she, along with others, seem to be stressed.
Over the summer, she had a lot to do.
“I just focused on trying to get all the homework and stuff over the summer I had to do [done],” Diaz said.
Now that she’s back at school, she is excited to spend more time with her friends, and even though they aren’t all in the same classes, she was excited to reunite with them.
“They help you grow in your faith more than you expect,” Diaz said. “You can find your group, no matter how long it takes.”
