In the heart of San Marco, there is a new pizza restaurant called Electric Dough. They serve Detroit-style pizza, which is a rectangular pizza with a thick, hard crust and caramelized cheese on the edges.
For an appetizer, I ordered the Pimento Cheese Dip. The dip is served with celery and bread crisps to eat with. Contrary to advertising, it is not a must-have; it’s a very standard cheese dip.
The first pizza I had was the Six-Cheese Cacio e Pepe. The six cheeses are parmesan, mozzarella, fontina, asiago, pecorino and whipped ricotta. It is also topped with bacon bits and cacio e pepe sauce.
This pizza was good, but the ratio of bread to cheese was high, and it needed more tomato sauce to bring the layers together. Overall, this was an okay pizza.
The second pizza I had was the Detroit Baller. It has sliced meatballs, Calabrian chili aioli, Ed’s red sauce drizzle, shaved Parmesan cheese and cacio e pepe sauce.
This pizza was definitely my favorite of the two that I tried. The aioli went great with the meatballs. The sauce was very good, and I liked having it on top to add flavor to the pizza.
Overall, the vibe was great. There are TVs to watch sports games and lots of room to sit and eat with your family and friends. The lighting creates a calm atmosphere. There are many windows so during the day, the natural light shines in. The music was low volume and it wasn’t very packed with people so you didn’t have to talk loudly. It was a good combination of booths and regular tables. The restaurant used to be a historical movie theater. From the outside it still looks like a movie theater.
The service was good, but you order your food at a counter, so you’re responsible for your own drinks and everything else.
The food itself is on the pricier side. A large pizza that isn’t very big for $27, compared to The Loop where a twelve-inch pizza is $18.49, and in my opinion, tastes better.
This a good second or third option if you find yourself in the area.
