Securing the job

One high schooler’s perspective on how to approach getting your first job.
Securing the job

Finding a first job as a high schooler can be challenging. It requires patience and determination to search for a position that aligns with you, your interests and your schedule.

The first step is to search for opportunities that resonate with your passions and skills. Reflect on your interests and what specific jobs might benefit you.

Going in person

If you decide you’d like to visit the business in person, requesting to speak with the manager and getting a face-to-face interaction can boost your chances of securing a job interview.

Submitting your application

On most employers’ websites, there is a section to submit an application.

As you move into the application phase, building a polished resume becomes essential.

Business and finance teacher Jerry Brigance emphasizes the importance of creating an error-free resume.

“The number one thing you should watch out for when building your resume is making sure there are no mistakes,” Brigance said.

A well-written resume is crucial when applying online, because it is your first impression to potential employers before they meet you in person.

“You have to use strong action verbs to help you stand out,” Brigance said.

He recommends using tools like ChatGPT.

Finding the job

In this new age of technology, there are many resources at your fingertips to uncover potential job opportunities. For instance, if you enjoy working with kids, consider exploring positions at summer camps, after-school programs or kids clubs. These roles can not only provide you with valuable experience but also allow you to engage in activities you love.

Once you find a field that fits you and your interests best, next you should reach out to possible employers.

Interviewing

Once you land a job interview, it’s important to present yourself in a way that is professional, but also you. Choose an outfit that is comfortable, yet appropriate for the specific role you are applying for. For example, if you are applying to a retail store, wear a casual dress or a simple polo.

During your interview, make sure to be yourself while still keeping things professional. Answer the employer’s questions fully and thoughtfully, while making sure to explain your background and why you are the best fit for this job.
