Think a young, rookie year Kobe Bryant, notoriously stubborn and defiant, meets Patrick Beverly, a decent role player, a career based off of grit, playing hard and taking advantage of the rulebook. When veteran Patrick Beverly tries to command his team, and the young star Kobe Bryant has aspirations of being the greatest ever, what happens?
Sonny Hayes, played by esteemed actor Brad Pitt, is an old timer who never realized his potential, who’s approached with the opportunity of a lifetime in his fifties to compete at the highest level on the Formula 1 track. He was signed by an old friend, the owner of a dying F1 team with one young star with potential who needs guidance. If the team doesn’t turn in a winning season, the owner will be bankrupt and forced to sell the team, which is an embodiment of his life’s work.
The team’s young hot shot is Joshua Pearce, played by up-and-coming British actor Damson Idris, who had a notable role in “Snowfall.” Initially, he won’t back down as leader of the team and rebukes Hayes’ advice, which leads to an incident on the track. That is the greatest catalyst for Pearce’s metamorphosis as a person.
The two eventually put aside their differences and work together. Towards the end of the film, the owner discovers Hayes’ career-ending injury he sustained in his twenties which should have ended his career. With one race left, Hayes decides to finish the season.
The film—which was financially backed by Apple —was shot masterfully and had realistic features, likely due to Lewis Hamilton’s contributions to the film. The budget was $300 million, but it has grossed more than double that as of September 3. Some parts of the movie were filmed during actual F1 events, according to formula1.com, which added to the realistic nature of the movie.
I loved the overall look of the movie; it felt crisp, and used very little CGI. My favorite part was Hayes deciding to compete in the last race, knowing it could be fatal. The scene was a beautiful demonstration of the will of man and more specifically, an athlete who is willing to die on the track. I don’t think there is anything more noble and respectable than a person who is willing to die for the chance to achieve their dreams.
“If the last thing I do is drive that car, I will take that life, man,” Hayes said “A thousand times.”
