Imagine a live version of “The Incredibles” meeting the Marvel universe to add a few modern twists and predictable turns. Sounds like any average superhero movie, right? “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” was exactly what you would expect from the action genre.

The movie begins in 1964 with only four heroes who all have superpowers, but that is until the heroes learn about a pregnancy in the group. “Invisible Woman” is finally carrying a child. This is lovely news for the hero parents, until the villain enters the plot and wants to take the child to save the Earth. The villain leaves a mysterious and unsettling message that leaves the heroes worried. The mother is not willing to sacrifice her future son, although the father is visibly weighing out the options with consideration. Somewhere in the middle of this, the baby is born. The villain then travels to Earth, but the heroes had prepared a plan that involved tricking the antagonist. Throughout the plot, it deepens until the protagonists and antagonist meet at the end for the final battle.

Considering Marvel is a large movie-producing company, they seem to always produce a well-done movie. A specific actor who did a great job was Pedro Pascal, as he played “Mister Fantastic.” Vanessa Kirby, who played his pregnant wife, also did a fantastic—no pun intended— job. Even the voice acting of the villains was done well, which is sometimes not executed well during movies. The cast contains several well known actors and the genre was followed well, but it feels noticeably average for the majority of the movie.

Although the movie followed a common plot, the script was done well. There were moments of laughter, which were far more entertaining than the moments of confusion. If you have not watched other “Fantastic Four” movies, the plot could potentially leave you wondering about a few elements. Although, the acting is done well with solid transitioning, so you can ultimately understand most of it.

Somewhat boring, somewhat exciting, yet somewhat worth buying a ticket to your local theater.
